Installing an additional binary shouldn't affect existing stuff in any way. And if it's a tool you require to get your work done properly, a sysadmin should be supportive. Just saying... Pure theory in most every workplace though. ;-) (And no, installing latest ffmpeg will not add security risks. Using a very old one is more risky.)
