Why do you expect this behavior? A file containing single frame will display once (as the other Carl observed). Or are you trying to determine whether a file is a single still image or motion of some kind (what about an animated GIF?)?

It would useful to tell us more about what you're trying to accomplish and exactly which version(s) of ffmpeg you're using.

Note also that a video file may have different durations in the various metadata and it's possible that none of those correspond with the duration if played from beginning to end.
