To take up your example: $ dd if=inputfile.ext bs=1M skip=4 of=outputfile.ext But if you're doing this with a video file, the result can be unplayable. This depends on the format of the video file, and possibly on its content. If you want to use ffmpeg to split a file, please understand that ffmpeg always demuxes and remuxes the video content, and usually cannot preserve the exact original container.
