I didn't perceive it as advertising at all. I thought your comments were
exactly the kind of thing we'd hear from someone who read the book, and
wanted to give a favorable 'book report' to the list. Since you're not
selling the book, I truly didn't understand the admonishment not to
'advertise', so I was a bit confused.
I like the footnotes, too! But I like footnotes. I also have been known to
get lost in a dictionary. As I look up one word, I get captured by those
words at the top of the page, and just have to go find out what they mean,
which means I read the definition, find a word I don't know, go look it up,
get captured by another word, and so on and so on. They should have a St.
Bernard for people like me. :)
OT: all the Cyril fleeces have homes. He's sending me some samples of
