When I've washed roving, I've chained it loosely -- similar to what you'd do
for a long warp. A pound of roving should chain up into a manageable length
for washing.

I don't think you'd want to wash it while it's still wound in balls. With so
many fibers in full contact with each other you'd run a risk of felting the
roving into a big, giant cat toy. And felting aside, you also couldn't be
sure that you'd get the inner fibers as clean as the outer layers.
