Hope this information helps -

The book "Knitting Around The World" from Threads has an article by Alice
Starmore taken from Threads magazine (June 1989) called Unraveling the Myths
of Shetland Lace. The article explains the history of the shawls. They
were made of one ply Shetland cobweb wool and knit with 14" double-pointed
steel wire needles ranging in size from 00 to 00000. The book can be
borrowed from the library. It is a collection of articles from older
Threads magazine.

All supplies can be purchased from Jamieson & Smith, 90 North Road, Lerwick,
Shetland, Scotland ZEI OPQ

One ply cobweb Shetland wool only comes in White. Cobweb is thinner than
laceweight which is a 2ply yarn.

Patternworks and Schoolhouse Press also sell Shetland cobweb, but their
steel lace needles only come in 8" length.
