To round out the topic, that is because your dishwasher trim must be aluminum (it's cheaper). That brings up the more general point that solutions of sodium hydroxide (modern, commercial lye) or wood ashes (potash lye, the original stuff historically) will attack aluminum, so aluminum pots should never be used with either of them.
