My first thought is a taped seam:  make two lap seams to a thin tape,
preferably silk ribbon, then cover the right side with embroidery or an

What do you mean by "hemstitch"?  I know the word only as a name for a 
class of drawnwork embroidery, which doesn't quite fit here.  I gather from
context that it's one of the overcasting stitches.

Lovely pictures, and you've designed the page so I can read the top while
waiting for the bottom to load.  I didn't notice any delay, and I'm on a
dial-up connection.

I wish one really could get the color of the fabric on the loom from undyed
wool!  (On my monitor, it's a delicate blue.)  The rest of the pictures show
a silvery gray that looks like your description.
