Hi June, I had the same thing happen with a new drum carder. The first 2 or 3 bats were light gray instead of white. I went ahead and spun and plied the Tunis wool and washed the skein. It came out perfectly white. After that there were no more metal particles. I think the wool will clean your carders for you.
