<<So that has me wondering, is this a common
problem with older Louets? Has anyone else experienced this?>>

My Louet is 20 years old, has taken a *lot* beating, and I used to transport it frequently for teaching, SOAR, etc.

None of the laminate has ever even started to come apart. The only problems I've had are that I've gone through several drive bands, the cap that attaches to the main wheel broke after ten years, as did the footman (the little piece of rubbery plastic.) And the bobbins have made grooves in the shaft of the flyer.

It's been used a lot!

I would definitely contact Louet about this problem. They're very helpful and nice.
