In case you don't have combs, another method for separating the two
coats is to use a flick card or hand card.  Hold the card firmly with
one hand, teeth up.  Hold the tip of the lock in your other hand, trying
not to catch any of the short fibers, but hold the long ones very
firmly.  Starting near the cut end, draw the lock through the teeth of
the card.  Depending on the overall length of the undercoat, you may
have to repeat this a few times per lock, drawing more of the length of
the lock through the teeth each time.  You'll have the longer fibers
left in your hand, the shorter ones in the card.  They can then be
removed and reprocessed as desired.
