I remember back in the early days of This Old House TV broadcasts, that they had on an expert Oriental Rug conservator/evaluator. He took the rugs out to the (clean) driveway and using a natural bristle garage broom, cleaned them with water from the hose (but don't remember what soap he used.)
Water doesn't hurt good quality wool rugs! Probably even lighter to handle according to Sara's suggestion than a completely soaked one, too! And giving them a good rug-beating upside down on the wet snow we got in upper Illinois is a very good work-out for you & your rug(s). Thx for the reminder!! You're one of the most sharing, information- filled ppl I know!
