We're Talking About Oil. Got It?
"The U.S. has perverted the UN weapons process by using it as a tool to
justify military actions, falsely so...The U.S. was using the inspection
process as a trigger for war," admitted Scott Ritter, former head of the
UN arms inspection team in Iraq. As Enver Masud of the Wisdom Fund says,
"The prostitution of the UN to the wishes of one superpower, endangers the
very foundation on which the UN was conceived." Of course, the United
States has always had a powerful voice in the United Nations. However,
with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the system of checks and balances,
without which no organization can function effectively, has also
collapsed. "Washington treats the United Nations as an extension of its
own policymaking apparatus when it needs international credibility, and
dismisses it as a meddling non-player in international diplomacy when real
multilateralism might prove inconvenient," says Phyllis Bennis.
As it concerned the situation of Iraq, the UN Security Council became
little more than an extension of the U.S. Department of State. While there
have been rumblings of dissent, to date neither Russia, China or France
are prepared to put the well-being of Iraqi children above their interests
as states. In the meantime, the basic principles and the laws of the
United Nations are being disabled and manipulated to facilitate its use
against Iraq and its people, as UN sanctions and U.S. continued assault
upon the Iraqi infrastructure inflict devastation on the Iraqi people of
such magnitude that this human rights crime might be viewed as genocidal
in scope.
