Air America is already being paid by advertisers for it's programming, but that isn't enough for them. They have to increase their income stream by now charging for access to their audio, whether it is streaming or downloads. Unless you have XM sat radio, which is fee based you are not going to be able to listen to them (beginning this month) until you pay the fee. A week ago they took Mike Malloy off of the main station in NYC and chalked it up to economic expediency and this week they announced their new premium service which requires a fee for anything you listen to. You can pay yearly or by the show. That insures also that they will be preaching to the choir. Nobody else is going to pay. And neither am I. And neither will anyone who is on a limited income, like retirees or the underemployed and unemployed. I think they shot themselves in the foot - but I didn't think they would last anyway. The name of their programming could be better titled "rant radio" than Air America, which is kind of ironic since Air America was the name of the CIA's airforce during the Vietnam War. Screw them. There is a lot of good radio available for download that won't cost you anything. Where they are carried by Clear Channel Radio [that right wing network] they are on free-advertiser supported radio, so they are still withing listening range in some markets - but they have also been dropped from many of those markets this last year and this year. I hear the death knell. People have voted with the ratings which aren't there and the stations owners who really decide. Their best bet was to keep it free and podcasted (for free) and they got greedy. There are other ways to increase income without sticking it to their most loyal fans. Fuck 'em. You can get To The Point and Left, Right and Center for free. And Unwelcome Guests has excellent programming. There is more than you can listen to if you had a different IPOD plugged into each ear.
