Greetings from the Philippine Foundation for Library Scholarship, Inc.!
We are pleased to invite you to the Lecture Series on Pioneer
Philippine Librarians : James Alexander Robertson and the Construction
of the Philippine Bibliographical Canon to be held on Tuesday, 16
September at one o'clock in the afternoon, Room 4, Mall of Asia
Conference Hall.
Mr. Gaspar A. Vibal, Founder of Filipiniana. net and Wikipilipinas will
be our speaker. Mr. Vibal will discuss the emergence of the modern
Philippine library by tracing the interconnections between eminent
bibliographers , archivists, historians and pioneer Philippine
librarians such as Wenceslao Retana, James Alexander Robertson, Emma
Blair, James Le Roy and Clemente Zulueta who, working in different
parts of the world and often under difficult circumstances, pioneered
the creation of a Philippine bibliographic canon during the early 20th
century. Although the lecture will present short biographies of these
great librarian pioneers, it will also cover each individual's sense
of librarianship and judgment in choosing which classic Philippine
books to include (and, conversely, to exclude) in the "modern"
Philippine library. The lecture will surely open another dimension in
understanding Philippine librarianship and bibliography
Attendance in this lecture / workshop will entail a fee of Pesos Two
Hundred pesos(Php200. 00) which will cover merienda and hand-out. The
number of participants is limited and is on a first-come, first-served
basis. Please confirm via email or telephone on or before October 12th
2008.
The Lecture Forum is a sequel to the 2006 Lecture on Pioneer
Philippine Librarians which discussed the contributions of Trinidad H.
Pardo de Tavera and held at the Jose Rizal University Auditorium.
