Ka Cesar,
I am eavesdropping on your conversations with Loreto and would like to share
the following with you all.
My husband and I have a small literacy project called Unang Aklat:First Books
for Filipino Children. Since we donate books directly to children and not to
school libraries, we chose this name. The books literally are the first books
that these children own, and our intention is to empower them. To own something
of value in an impoverished community is  very empowering, (more so if you are
just a child), andthey are books which represent education and your future. Now
on its second year, it is still a small project which we fund out of our
own pockets, from warehousing to shipping, with our
personal labor thrown in. No volunteers at this stage. Momentarily,  that is,
until it grows. My husband supports my lifestyle financially and whateverlittle
my Bookshop earns are committed to this project. Allow meto thank my Bookshop
clients for their support. After 25 years in the book business here in the US,
and now on the brink of retirement,I have turned my mind into social
engineering and wish me luck !
We chose an elementary school in San Jose, Antique and the childrenfrom Grades
l-Vl are the recipients. They use the books in theirReading Program because the
school has limited resources. It is a five-year program and we know the
progress of the school children in readingand comprehension at the end of the
school year. Needless to say, thereare other components to this literacy
project that are on the backburnerfor lack of resources and supervisory time
at our end.
I do not mind sharing my imput about this project. This is a project that other
people can follow for their own towns or barangays. The project is actually a
tie-up between the school (thru the school principal) and ourselves,
although we plan to expand it to include  other members of the community next
year, our third year. Our thoughts are that we want to keep this a private
endeavor because it can easily be politicized and used for other people's
purposes.
According to UNESCO a few years back, there is a large percentage of young
people dropping out of school after their 4th grade for many reasons. If we
(Filipinos abroad especially) do not extend a helping hand to ouryoung people,
what will happen to the next generation of Filipinos? Hopefully, projects like
ours will help to alleviate the situation, even in a small way. We
want children to develop a love for books and reading at a young age. As we
all know, good reading habits translate to good grades, which in turn will mean
a good education, which ultimately is a passport out of poverty.
So, whatever little we do, in whatever way we can, will help our Inang
Bayan. We know that other people have good projects and good intentions. To
dream and to speak about it is the beginning but it is important to put our
words into action and walk the talk. Plan individually or in small groups
because it is faster to start something small with just a few heads put
together. In our case, it is just Rob's and mine.
It would be nice to hear what others are doing which can be duplicated
by other people in a different setting. This is the reason why doable projects
like this should be shared, not because we have bragging rights, but because we
want to help motivate other people who may have plans to do something similar
but are afraid to start. The important thing is to start small, baby steps,
until your footing is firmer. Best to all,
Linda
P. S. - BTW, we send used but clean children's books from the US, properly
screened so that they are not totally alien to our culture. Nice, hardbound,
colorful books on nature and the enviroment are big hits, as well as folk and
hero tales; books that teach human values aside from Reading. We are lucky to
have a free supply from some public libraries in our area but sometimes, we do
buy them from library book sales. Being in the book business, I know of other
sources which I have yet to tap. ---

Oo Loreto, kaya maghahanap tayo.  We will ask Arnel and Pastor Israel Alvaran
or Dale Asis for Tucuma. And we will look for some from Samar, preferably from
the North, for the San Miguel, Las Navas, Integrated Library.

$1.42. $10, $100. $1,000 (naku po), $1 million. Diyos ko.

I don't collect money, Kuya Cesar. You do that as organizer then make check
payable to LBC or Manila Box or ask someone to sponsor one box. I will get all
the materials, donated and bought.

Used books and a few new ones, stuffed toys, crayons, pens/pencils, craft
paper, safety scissors, educ puzzles if avail, etc

para medyo kumpleto rekado.

Maliliit na projects lang pero nakakatulong din naman kahit papaano.

Sources are my family members, friends, library book sales, Border Books and
even Goodwill. Anybody can do this, tiyaga at lakas ng loob lang and no one is
making money out of these; we just want to help to promote literacy one
balikbayan box at a time. Nasa recipients na how they can optimize these
limited resources to benefit the

schoolchildren and teachers. Kailangan lang talaga na me mga literacy programs

that are fun, creative, easy to implement and effective.

Maybe, Manang or Ading Amanda Bueno can help in this regard esp re: First Five.

Thanks a lot po!

Loreto

To a Barangay Integrated School in poor Samar. Pati sana sa Tucuma, in
Paranaque, a very, very poor community of the poorest of the poor in Metro
Manila.

Below is a discussion on the books intended for Barangay San Miguel, in Las
Navas, Nothern Samar.

The donations puede naman ng $1.00 pero ang stamp is already $0.42 cents, medyo
sayang kung $1.00 lang.

Sa Tucuma, puede seguro kay Dale Asis, Executive Director of the Global
Coaltion Phlippines. I will get the full address.

Sa San Miguel, we will ask Gov Daza or Mr. Quintin L. Doroquez for their
contacts.

Salamat.

UPDATES FOR THE BOOKS IN BARANGAY SAN MIGUEL, LAS NAVAS, NORTHERN SAMAR

Yes, it would be nice to have a reading program. The schoolchildren should be
given time to go to the library to read or be read to esp the younger ones or
it could be done in the classroom.

I am also sending small stuffed toys to be used with the books. The
librarian/teachers must be creative to use the books together with the
toys to make reading fun.

They can also have a contest on who could read the most books, how many
new vocabulary words the students learn and using it in a sentence,
spelling contest,

translation contest, word association contest. They can have group
spelling contest wherein each student in a group have a big flash card
with a letter and compete against another group in running to the front
and form the assigned word.

They can also have a buddy reading program where the older kids read to the
younger ones, one on one or one is to sml group. They could do this under the
trees, in the library, or in the classroom.

The teachers could also have a "Word of the Day" program by introducing
a new vocabulary word each day to be used in conjunction of what they
will be reading on that day or several words.

They can also tie this in with an arts class (cut up paper and
form letters and words and color them). They could also ask the older
students to read a book and write the gist of the story and have a
class discussion. It all depends how motivated and creative the
teachers are in inspiring and teaching their students using whatever materials
they have.

But don't worry, the younger kids will have fun with the books I will
send, very colorful, interactive( pull out and pop up books), very
educational but in English.

Translation maybe needed.

The older ones will have pang-young adults/teenagers like Twilight if
they are following this extremely popular series(twilight, new dawn,
etc), Harry Potter and other series reading books and some Math, Science,
English books incl dictionaries also fiction and non-fiction books for the
teachers.

These are used books in good condition and slightly used ones whatever I could
pack in a 20x20x20 balikbayan box.I wish I could give more but many are asking
and I only have limited resources esp for shipping costs.

I hope this small donation will help inspire the teachers to be
creative in teaching and ignite in the students a deep interest in
reading so they discover the magic of knowledge and appreciation in
each book.

Maraming salamat po!
