Finger prints are very difficult to clean off film and sometimes can eat
into the emulsion if left on for any length of time since they are the
result of not only body oils but also possibly body acids. Sometimes you
can remove fresh fingerprints by using some of the commercial film cleaners
which are applied via clean lint-free cloth or Q-tips and some very gentle
circular rubbing. Dust can usually be blown off with either compressed air
or syringe generated air and/or brushing the film lightly with a soft camel
hair brush.

If the film still has processing chemistry on it, you can try rewashing the
film in tepid flowing water and dipping in Photo-Flo or similar solution for
30 seconds after washing and before air drying in a dust free clean
environment. However, it is possible that what you are taking as left over
processing chemistry may very well be water marks on the film which are
extremely difficult to get rid of.

Subject: filmscanners: What can I use to clean film?

My filmstrips sometimes look like there is still some chemicals left on
them from processing. How can I get my filmstrips squeaky clean for
scanning? This includes dust and finger prints also.

Thanks in advance,

Dan
