Yes, this is exactly what the "Advanced Workflow Suggestions" section
of the help file recommends.
The problem is that VueScan is expecting there to be some part of
the scanned image to be somewhat unexposed. If you're
taking pictures of the sky, the negative is usually quite dark and
VueScan mis-computes the color of the orange mask.
