I'd personally be happy to trade off memory (even a lot of memory) if
the multiple-pass function became useful to me. Maybe it could be
another option?

Lets face it, memory is pretty cheap right now - and nerds like us
scanner folks probably already have loads of it just so we can scan
and manipulate images anyway :-)
