Al, For what it's worth I have an SS4000 (not the plus) which I like very much. I've scanned a variety of slides and negs with what I consider to be excellent results. The only comparison I can make is to a Canon FS2740 and, to me, the difference is significant. I am using VueScan and am also very pleased with it. My workflow is to scan to a tiff image making no corrections in VueScan. I usually scan many slides in one sitting, perhaps as many as 20 or 30 batch scanning 4 at a time. When all have been scanned I open Photoshop to view them for the first time. With few exceptions what I see initially in Photoshop is exactly what I see on my light box. I then color correct, crop, and sharpen as necessary then save and/or print.
I am well pleased with my SS4000 and recommend it highly. Hope this helps! In my price range, these seem to be the best 2 scanners. (The Canon FS4000 appears to have poor shadow performance and I've had enough of this with the Elite II.) I'm attracted by the extra resolution, low shadow noise, good depth of field and SCSI interface of the SS4000 (and Polaroids general customer service) but I have found ICE invaluable at times. Also, the SS4000 is now quite elderly in scanner terms. Has anyone had direct experience of both these scanners, preferably on dense slides like Kodachrome?
