The patterns result from minor inequalities in the sensitivity of the CCD cells used for each scan line. The Nikon 8000ED uses a three-line scanning assembly that has a tendency to cause banding such as you saw, but if it becomes too much of a problem in a scan, you can tell the scanner to use just one line for the scan, and the banding disappears (but the scan takes three times as long, which is why the single-line scan is not used as often).
