I have a Scan Dual III and also noticed this. But in my case, it was due to the scanner's door being between the partway open detent for 35mm holders, and the fully open detent for the APS adapter. When I tapped the door up to the 35mm detent, it resumed normal operation.
Perhaps, if the Dual II is the same, the door is not set, or the sensor mechanism that detects door position is no longer working well. I have also noted during normal operation, that when the scanner needs to realign itself with the beginning of the holder, it will kick it as far out as it can, then retract it again and resume the scanning operation. When fully extended from the unit, the holder sags about one-half to two degrees down, so it appears that a perfectly squared-off insertion is not necessary. My money is on the door sensors at this point. ________ Here's a link for service centers in the Americas: http://www.minoltausa.com/eprise/main/MinoltaUSA/MUSAContent/CPG/CPG_SupportCenter/CPGSupport_Service Only the primary service facility in New Jersey will service digital equipment, like the scanner. Ask for an estimate, because it will prolly be spendy. Then consider purchasing a new Scan Dual III. Mine is excellent! Or, for a little more cash, you can find some model with DigitalICE, the only feature I wish I had on the Dual III. The Dual III can be had for probably under $300 now. -Andrew S. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 4:02 PM Subject: [filmscanners] RE: Problems with Minolta Scan Dual II When I have experienced what you did, it was often because the holder was not insertedperfectly square with the scanner in all the directions (right and left, up and down). Any variance in any of the directions that might result in a crooked insertion would cause the problem rewquiring the taking out of the holder and its reinssertion before the scanner would accept it. This would happen if the holder was inserted with the slightest of incline (up or down) from level as well. You are right it is a hardware problem not a software one (probably a design problem which requires much to rigorous and precise tolerances than most people can act in accordance with with any regularity. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Preston Earle Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 10:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [filmscanners] Problems with Minolta Scan Dual II I have been using a Minolta Scan Dual II for several years. Some time ago I began having difficulty getting the scanner to accept the film holder and begin a scan. When working properly, the holder is inserted in the scanner until it "catches" on the internal drive mechanism, which starts the scanning process. Initially, occasionally the scanner would not "catch" the holder, but rather the holder would continue to push into the scanner and there would be slight resistance and clicking sound, like gears not meshing properly, but nothing "caught" the holder. If I reinserted the holder, it might "catch" the second time. Over time the problem got worse (harder to get to "catch"). I began trying several things (closing and reopening the software, turning the scanner off and back on, jiggling the scanner door, reciting various incantations, etc.) and the scanner would eventually "catch" the holder and begin scanning. Once it started scanning, I didn't have any problem with subsequent scans. I never could determine just what it was that made the scanner "catch" the holder. Now, nothing I have tried will get the scanner to "catch", so it is useless. Has anyone else has this problem or a suggestion on a solution? I don't think it is a software issue, since the same thing happens with Vuescan and the Minolta software (on WinXP Home). It seems like there is microswitch that isn't working properly, but I hate to start disassembling the scanner, considering my level of mechanical and electrical expertise. I posted this problem on the comp.periphs.scanners newsgroup a couple of weeks ago, and the only suggestion I got was to push the holder harder into the scanner until it "catches", but that didn't seem to be applicable since I can easily push the holder past the supposed start point. Is there a Minolta or other service center that handles filmscanners? I couldn't locate one through Google, and the KonicaMinolta site doesn't seem to know about filmscanners.
