Dan Margulis has been writing about manual methods of color-correction similar to Shadow/Highlight in PSCS but using luminosity blends and blurs instead of the S/H sub-routines. An article in the Sept. Issue of Electronic Publishing covers some of the techniques, and the current issue has more. See http://ep.pennnet.com/Articles/Article_Display.cfm?Section=Archives&Subsecti on=Display&ARTICLE_ID=212330&KEYWORD=Margulis or http://tinyurl.com/6dla4. (May require registration but well worth it.) As to the need for 16-bit edits, if you can provide Dan with any real-world color photo image that shows any benefit when edited in 16-bit vs. 8-bit, there are several guys on the Applied Color Theory discussion group that will be forever in your debt.
