I've had a Nikon Coolscan V for ~3+ years now. I live in an apartment, and it lives in the living room (activity, dust, etc.). I used it heavily for years, and then hardly at all in the last year (illness). So I scanned a roll recently and it, well, looks kinda crappy. So my questions: is it likely that the unit is pretty dirty by now? If so, should I try to clean it myself or pay Nikon Service? I've heard that the cleaning costs more than 1/2 the price of the scanner, but that's old info and could be incorrect. Any and all advice appreciated. Many thanks.
