I totally disagree with what Jon said, and I do find it necessary to send
this to the list, since this is discussing the very nature of the list.

I have no idea what the nature of Jon's crossword list is, but as far as
discussion lists go, the discussion is "public" to the list. And with the
Finale list in particular.

Based on my limited experience, I have to disagree. The only other list to
which I
subscribe (for crossword puzzle constructors and editors) has a Reply
default to the
individual poster. A specific effort has to be made to reply to the list.
Accordingly, the amount of detoured discussions, not to mention repeated
responses
(how many postings have we had to endure today that all basically said the
same
thing?), gets reduced dramatically. And don't get me started on ad hominem
attacks
and misunderstandings that result from crossed messages.

By the way, when I replied to your original posting, did you happen to
notice that
you didn't receive two messages? I deleted your address and left the List
address.
It took less time to do that than to type this sentence.

Really, Johannes, I'm not trying to change your mind. I'll take the list and
the
default reply either way. And the next time Andrew and David and Crystal
start
sniping at each other, I'll wish they'd "take it outside" and hit the delete
key.
Like I do now. :-)

Jon
