Philip Aker gave you one good suggestion - another is that rarely is the 
process which you outline the way to put files onto CD.  Often there is 
an additional step of editing the sound file in some way to boost, cut 
or normalize the volume, at the very least.  Other editing often occurs, 
also.

Perhaps in the conversion application you are using to change the 
standard midi to .AIF format there is a setting you could investigate to 
boost the levels?
