You can't open an OfficeXP word-processing document in Word3, I would 
bet.  There is a point where backward compatibility is an issue even for 
Micro$oft.

But there are huge internal changes from version to version of Finale, 
and the internal data structure is so vastly different from a 
word-processing document that to compare them is very unfair.

In any event, complain all we want to (if we want to, I for one have no 
problem in the lack of backward compatibility), we DO have to accept the 
fact.

It would appear that midi is the only way, until the Mac2003 is released.
