I reinstalled the latest (v.11.0) HP Deskjet 690c printer drivers, and things have improved. The printout generally is now excellent, including barlines, stems etc. But the angled beams are still jagged (its the same in Fin2k2). Is it just that my 300dpi printer isn't high enough resolution to get the angled beams smooth?
