Dear jef,

You might try making a copy of the current document then use copy and 
replace to  enter the music from the backup file. This should give 
you the current layout with the backup music.

I like to make my templates contain essential layout information. 
When I need a new template, I often use a completed file for it, 
strip the entries, and delete just enough empty bars so that the 
template has at least two pages of blank staves. I use Data Check to 
get rid of deleted items, then save as a template. It will retain the 
layout of the original. This is especially helpful when the layout of 
the first page is very different from the other pages.
