A similar function, which I would find useful, is a utility which will copy
from one layer to another while leaving the original layer intact.  As far
as I can tell, the Move Layers function always erases the source layer.

You can do this fairly easily in the present configuration by copying the original music to the clipboard, changing the layer of what's on screen, then pasting the clipboard back into the staff.
