Column view of *what*? The standard list controls used in Windows have used clicking the column headers for sorting and doubleclicking the divider to the right of a column to autoset the column width since Win95. This has been seen most in the file manager application, Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer, the web browser). Since Win95, all FILE OPEN/SAVE dialogs are subclassed instantiations of Windows Explorer, so in the "detail view" (i.e., columns) within those dialogs, the same features were present. Previous to that, the automatic width feature was present in Access 2 and Excel 5, as well in tables in Word 6. Lots of applications on Windows have implemented the same thing. I would assume that OS X probably has this as part of the OS (in the presentation manager?) so that all apps that utilize the OS APIs will get the benefit of this feature. It is not implemented at that level in Windows -- my understanding is that you have to use MS development tools to get that functionality, or 3rd grid controls that have it built in. That is, it's not an OS API call that provides that functinality. -- David W.
