The 4 on the numeric keypad doesn't work for this purpose on my Mac. PCers or other Macers may find different.

let chords influence music spacing.  I don't recommend it.

That's just what we are trying to avoid; we don't want the chords to affect the music spacing, we only want to keep the CHORDS from colliding with each other. There is no way to automate this without destroying the music spacing, as you said. We use the spacing algorithm when the number of notes and chords is the same; if they are not the same, we need to jump through hoops to keep the measure from being wildly misaligned or the chords from colliding.
