My original comment, which has spawned several responses, was intended to
mean composers of the European tradition, not just those physically living
in Europe. That would include the Americas and other places where they went
with their concepts and tools.

This is probably just semantics, but I'm with Andrew on this.  No one was
claiming that these composers were outside the European tradition.  In
fact, my recollection is that Andrew originally cited them specifically as
non-Europeans who contributed to that tradition, not as a separate school.
