The confusion over this issue is why I always put fore-and-aft arrows whenever I call for a proportion. That way there can be no doubt about which value is the old one and which the new. And when I switch from X/4 to X/8 I always put a cautionary Q=Q or E=E to show that note values remain constant. I recommend this belt-and-suspenders approach to everybody.

One spot in the standard repertoire that gets interpreted two different ways because of this problem is in the first mvt. of Hindemith's _Symphonic Metamorphoses of Themes by Weber_, where there's a lone 6/8 bar in an otherwise 2/4 movement. Some conductors keep the eighth note constant while others beat two dotted-Q at the prevailing tempo. Me, I favor the first interpretation, because if the second were intended Hindemith could just have written triplets w.o changing the meter. _______________________________________________
