I have decided to explain it by saying that the most conscientious way of notating that time signature change is to use the q=h marking above the staff, but that in reality you will encounter instances where that marking is absent and yet you are meant to cut the duration of the quarter notes in half. I've included examples of both in the exercises they sing at the end of the lesson. It's not the most important concept I need to get across. If they can count out the various time signatures and follow repeat signs by the end of eight sessions, they will be doing well for actors. If they can identify the key signatures and know what key a particular song needs to be in for them to sing it comfortably, I will be delighted.I agree with John in principal, but you're right, Crystal, that there is no hard rule.<<
