Your dictionary is probably just following the NED, first edition, wh. gives the same citation. While I have noticed other occasions on wh. NED clearly gives too late a date for the origin of certain musical terms ("cotillon" comes immediately to mind), I suspect that we're dealing here with a word that originated in another language and was adopted by English relatively late. Certainly "atonal" would have been used first in German.
