In order to record from a PC you need to be sure your input is selected. To do this, follow these steps:

1) double-click the speaker icon in the systray
2) select Options menu, then Properties.
3) in the following dialog the middle part is labeled: "Adjust volume for" and there are three selections: Playback (selected by default), Recording, and Other (mine is grayed out)
4) click the radio button next to Recording
5) in the bottom panel be sure there are check marks next to each input source you might want to use
6) when you click OK you are returned to a panel which is different from the original one, with your Input possibilities showing.
7) to record with a mic, click the box labeled Select at the bottom of the Microphone column
8) click the X to close this dialog
9) you are now ready to begin recording from a microphone
10) to use other sources, such as midi output simply follow this procedure and select a different source

Hope this helps.

Can anyone suggest a website which will give advice on recording sound using
a PC, please?
A google search only returns commercial sites with information that doesn't
help me.

I tried recording by plugging a mike into the back of my computer and using
sofrtware in my Yamaha sound card, but nothing happened.

I only want to make simple recordings of piano accompaniments for
instrumentalists I accompany, nothing fancy.

Thanks for any help you can give.
