Two possible ways to make an expression cover up part of a slur:

1) (my preferred way) Make the slurs measure-attached.

2) (a kludge, but useful if you want to keep note-attached slurs) Attach the expression to a measure in the next system, then drag it up to where you need it.

By the way, if the text item is only one line of text there's no need to make a shape expression: make a text expression, choose "Enclose Expression" and make the enclosure opaque with a line thickness of zero.

I need to place small text items that interrupt slurs. I have tried creating shape expressions anchored after the spot I want to mask the slur but a redraw brings back the underlying slur. Bad memories. I can do it in Illustrator but perhaps this is old hat around here (I hope so). It's been an awfully long time since I tried anything like this. Any general tips about doing Schenker would certainly be appreciated. It's interesting - I wouldn't say fun - but certainly interesting. Any new "carrot" fonts I should know about?
