Johannes: A few minutes experimentation made clear your description of how the "extend beams over rests" option reveals how Finale handles beaming. The key point that I was missing was that the beams extend from element to element in the measure, whether the elements are notes or rests. So, if I have, say, a 5/8 measure with an eighth note, rest, rest, rest, eighth note, and try to extend a beam across the measure, I need to set the beam at the rightmost note, next rest to the left, next rest, and so on. If "extend beams over rests" is not set, I see nothing until the whole beam leaps into view. Then, if I inadvertently reset a beam segment anywhere between the two notes, the whole thing vanishes mysteriously. No wonder I thought beaming acted capriciously! Thanks again for your help
