You won't hear much vibrato in recent Handel performances!I've heard it argued that the reason opera singers use--and get away with--such big vibratos is so they can be heard over an orchestra. Unless someone can provide me with evidence to the contrary--preferably experimental--the thought of vibrato increasing volume strikes me as so much piffle! ... John
So make that "...a *large* orchestra." My own sense of the matter is not that vibrato increases volume, but that some degree of vibrato is necessary if a high vocal volume level is to be sustained for a long time w. minimum strain. Vocal vibrato involves a give-and-take among various throat muscles, and I can well imagine that this might be easier to keep up than a single, set level of tension.
