So what information would a sensible person give to eBay that they would not

"A law enforcement agency," or anyone who can create a convincing mockup of law enforcement letterhead in InDesign (i.e., any 12-year old child with access to a computer).

As for "what information," well... can I presume you're also okay with libraries and bookstores handing over your reading history on the slightest pretext to anyone who claims to be affiliated with law enforcement?

Also, as the article states, eBay owns PayPal, and PayPal is a bank. Many people on this list use PayPal's services extensively. If they're anything like me, they might not be thrilled about eBay's policy of practically falling over itself to hand over personal financial information, including credit reports, to anyone who sends a fax on official-looking letterhead. "You might want to get a subpoena" indeed.
