Is there any way to display "ghost" staff lines, spaced just the same as the others, outside the usual five-line staff? I would find this invaluable for articulation placement.

You can use guides for this. Look in View/Grid/Guide Options and set up the light blue solid line and Show Guides. In Page View, double-click on the left ruler to create and adjust the guides. If you really like this, you can insert them into your templates so they will always be there.
