I know this has been discussed before, but a thorough search of the archives
didn't bring up an answer to my specific question.
I know about the "Break Multimeasure Rests" check-box in measure-attached
expressions, but that doesn't really do what I'd like it to. I have checked
that option in all of my rehearsal numbers, but, when I extract the parts,
the rehearsal numbers do just that-- they completely break any multimeasure
rests of which they would have been a part. I would rather it create
multimeasure rests on either side of the expression, but that doesn't seem
to be possible... It seems that I can either swallow the expression in the
rest or have no multimeasure rest at all. I know I can manually fix it, but
that's tedious in a full-band score.
Thoughts? Comments? Commiseration?
Brad,
I prefer to use the measure tool and click on the barline where you require the break to be. You can then select from various options one of which is "break multimeasure rest". I also frequently move to the next measure and check "start new staff system" esp. if the previous measure contained a double bar line, a key or a time change. This ensures that in the parts all double barlines and major changes fall at the end of system. If set up carefully, you can obtain near identical layouts for all extracted parts this way. (Do this only in the file to be extracted, not the score as it could mess up the layout).
Another thing about rehearsal marks; make sure they are attached to the start of the measure where you want them to show. If you place them at the end of the previous measure and that measure is the last in a multi-rest group upon extract, the reh. mark (or score expression) will get swallowed up in the grouping and become invisible. Maybe that's what is happening in your score.
This means that they will generally appear at the LH side of the page rather than at RH system ends. This may not be to your liking but it will be consistent and require little editing in the parts.
Also be aware that if you have created an exp. or reh. mark with break MM rest checked and then you duplicate it, that the break gets carried over into the dulicate. I received a file last week where every single staff exp. had been checked this way!
I nearly always prepare a duplicate file of the score to alter and set up for extracting parts. There are usually different facets that are required in the parts and altering these could mess up the original score layouts etc. A huge amount of editing time can be saved if you get this right from the start.
I have a kind of check list that I place in all my templates next to page 1 as a non printing text block (or you can just drag it off to the right of the page). It contains reminders for things like; removing word extentions, optimisation and other items; adjusting page setup, changing font sizes and positions to suit parts rather than score; adding cues; showing text repeats in all staves; breaking MM rests and starting new systems (as mentioned) and many others. I find this list invaluble and am constantly tweaking the contents to suit projects and preferences. It enables me to get a near perfect extract every time with consistent layouts across many scores and parts and that really saves hours of editing later on.
Hope you find this helpful.
