Sharpeye is the scanning software, and it seems very good for fairly well printed basic music. I haven't tried it on complex rhythms or older, less-clear printing, but the tests I ran were impressive. Yes, you can do all that you want to, because once you scan the music and then import the xml file into Finale (You should purchase the full Dolet plug-in - I believe they have a package of Sharpeye and Dolet for $149) it is just another finale file.

On another front, Recordare have released a public beta of an xml plug-in for Sibelius which will allow you to export a Sibelius file as xml and then use the Dolet plugin to import the xml file into Finale. I have purchased the full Dolet plugin (it's only $19.95) and it imported the xml sibelius output very nicely, expressions imported as expressions, rhythms and pitches translated very nicely.

So it seems that now we DO have a means to import Sibelius files into Finale.

I did break down and buy Sibelius for an engraving project I have contracted and am very impressed with it so far. But I was dismayed to find out that it can't import Finale 2003 files very well, although it can export Finale files from 2001 or 2002.

But the lite scanning program which comes with Sibelius is only marginally better than the lite scanning program which comes with Finale.

But the trials I did using Sharpeye during the trial period (I still can't decide if I would use it that much so I have held off purchasing it) impressed me a lot and it seems that music scanning (at least with Sharpeye) has finally come of age.

Wow- I'm impressed! OK guys, tell me, does this mean I can scan in, for
example an out of print trombone part in alto clef, fiddle-fiddle, and print
out a part in bass clef (or even BbTreble)? Could I also add in say some 4th
horn cues prior to print?

If so what do I need to buy? I've never used or owned a scanner, but my
son-in-law has one he'll give me. Then what? What is the magic programme-
Recordare?

Fullish info please. Cheers, Keith in OZ.

Subject: [Finale] Scanning software

It's been a while since I tried out any music scanning software so I
downloaded the trial version of Recordare's package (see Michael Good's

post

today). Things have improved a lot!

Check out my first experiment with it - 5 minutes work and no editing:

The Finale result after processing with SharpEye2 and importing as XML:

It is note perfect even with a couple of voices per staff. Impressive,

yes?
