I would venture even further to say that the envelope is constantly being pushed, but with the totally fragmented FM radio market, the non-existant AM radio market, and the total lack of variety shows on TV, no single person has any clue as to the broader picture of "rock" music unless he/she engages in a lot of personal research, buying lots of CDs and sampling as much on-line radio as possible. And with the huge number of indie bands out there, this is almost impossible to do in any sort of organized manner and still have enough time to hold down a job and get some sleep.

I don't dispute your larger point, but I think it's difficult to argue that "envelope-pushing is almost entirely absent from rock today" when Radiohead is one of the most popular rock bands in the world. "Exception that proves the rule," sure, but still...

Just thought I'd (uncharacteristically) inject a little note of optimism.
