I use both "type into score", and "edit lyrics" with equal facility, and I am
pretty confident that I know how each work. They both have their place. The
strengths of "type into score" are 1) that one sees instantly what one types,
making it easy to amend the problem if you have misspelled a word, or
inadvertantly typed an equals sign instead of hyphen; 2) that one immediately
sees to which note each syllable is attached, and 3) that one rather quickly
gets hints as to which measures may have problems with syllables running
together. The biggest weaknesses are that every letter needs to be typed into
the score, and manipulation of fonts / typefaces is limited. By contrast, the
biggest strength of the "edit lyrics" system, is that one can type a block of
text, and click assign it into score, and certain types of editing, for example
replacing every occurrence of "ec-ce" with "éc-ce" (even with the absence of a
search and replace feature). The biggest drawbacks are that editing that
changes the number of syllables in the lyrics block changes the underlay in
ways that cannot be undone, except by taking recourse to the "undo / redo
features" list, and that if finds errors in spelling, or omissions of syllable
separators, these are more difficult to correct in "edit lyrics" than in "type
into score". As Marks states, there are typeface / font alterations that are
more easily done in th edit lyrics dialog box than in Type into score.

Both tools are powerful, and useful in their own way. I would not willingly
give up either one. In my mind, though, it is a problem that editing using the
two tools which I would expect that should show the same results in the lyrics
block do not show the same results, and it is an even bigger problem that this
fact is not noted in the documentation.
