[Finale] Playback glitches

I am using Finale 2004 with Windows 98. Had no problems until I started 
playing back files that originated in 2001 or 2003 and were transferred 
2004. When I play back the transplanted files I get intermittent very short 
duration"choke points" where the playback is disrupted and then resumes. It 
sounds like the program is trying to play the notes but can't seem to sort 
them out.

Finale support suggested using an older MIDI driver which they sent. With 
that installed, there was no playback at all. Returning to the original 
driver, the interruptions changed from intermittent very short periods to 
extended periods (about 3-4 seconds). A file did play one time to the end 
without interruption. It was a slow second movement of 60 measures. I sent 
that file to Winsupport who said it played fine, but I don't know what 
Windows version they used.

I ran the DirectX diagnostic which reported some errors. I sent this to 
Winsupport. It was then suggested that I install the latest version of 
Direct X drivers.  Version 8.0 I downloaded said it was not compatible with 
my current Windows version.

Has anyone had a problem of this kind with 2004 and Win 98?
