A "Don't Print" box on the expression definition screen would not allow for a mixture of printing and nonprinting characters. For example, I have 5 different expressions to select playback patches for pizzicato: "pizz. Vln. I", "pizz. Vln. II", etc., where the "pizz." characters print out and the rest are display only. Having the nonprinting characters grayed out instead of full black makes for an easier-to-read score on screen.
