I'm not sure I understand the difference between these two notions in the case where you only have one verse (i.e. one line of text under the music). Is there one of the two I can simply ignore in that case? The example in the OLD is with three verses, so it's hard to see what will happen with just one.

my experience suggests that it is helpful to consider each lyric syllable to be in it's own miniature text block. Justification refers to how the syllable is placed in the block, left, center, or right; alignment refers to the location of the handle of the block, and its position relative to the zero point of the assiociated note, again, left, center, or right. In general, they have little impact where there is only one line of text beneath the note, but in some instances, (the principal ones of which that come to mind being the first syllable of the lyric, and any syllable with a word extension) it does have an impact.
