Be cautious: If you adjust the global (unoptimized) spacing so that not all staves will fit on the first page you may well get into trouble. You should optimize the first page before you adjust for the second page. Also, there is nothing wrong optimizing the rest of the score as well as long as you make sure you keep all staves (either with the relevant staff option or by selecting "Do not hide staves" or whatever it is called in the optimization dialog). Optimizing is not only about hiding staves.
